Worshyper

Weekend Warrior, April 17 - 19

While you’ll probably get your fill of purchasing new music this Saturday, why not check out some new music live tonight at Bourbon & Branch? It’s been a moment since Worshyper have performed in Philly, and they’ll have a bunch of new material for us this evening. Psych-pop outfit Weekender has been working on recording new tunes as well so expect to hear them intermingled with the band’s older favorites. And if you haven’t grabbed your copy of Suburban Living’s self-titled LP (PaperCup Music), which was our February Record of the Month, then you should definitely save some money out of your Record Store Day budget to get one. After all, you don’t really need a made-up holiday to give you a reason to purchase great music. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

Weekend Warrior, May 2 - 4

Worshyper is celebrating tonight at Bourbon & Branch the vinyl release of their full-length album, Keeps, which you should totally grab a copy for those nights when your partner needs a bit of sexing up. The group has just been getting better and better with each performance so I am definitely looking forward to this evening's set. And what you should be equally excited about is the return of Power Animal, a.k.a. Keith Hampson, with a whole album of new material. There will be plenty of posi vibes all around. Also joining in the fun will be the electro-tropicalia grooves of Dream Safari and NYC beatmaker/singer Shraf. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ - H.M. Kauffman

New Track: "Got Your Back" - Worshyper

Here's a sexy new track from electro-R&B/soul crew Worshyper, who's "Got Your Back." It's off their full-length album Keeps, which was released towards the end of last year via AMDISCS, but will finally be put on vinyl. They'll be celebrating the availability of the hard copies tomorrow night at Bourbon & Branch.

Communion w/Vacationer, Worshyper, Drone Ranger, The Ghost In You & More at Underground Arts March 6

Don’t worry, Communion doesn’t mean anyone will have to say grace, and it’s more of a bring-your-own-wafer situation (if that’s what you’re into). Rather, it’s a showcase of some of Philly’s fine talent, coupled with the collective’s network of national/international touring acts. Vacationer has probably the most appropriate name out of any band. Their songs transport listeners to a tropical shore with their “Nu-Hula” style: poppy tracks infused with island melodies (some even incorporate samples of tropical birds chirping). The group isn’t afraid to experiment with traditionally opposing sounds, creating music that rises and falls like waves on a beach - sometimes rolling smoothly from one sound to the next, but more often crashing into the ears with varying moods that, somehow, still feel natural. Another Deli favorite, Worshyper, takes their sound in a different direction. The vocals are R&B, the music is electronic, and the result is infectious, futuristic soul. Psych rockers Drone Ranger will remind you that guitars are still alive and well in Philly, adding lo-fi synth that feel like it’s being broadcast live from outer space. They play shoegaze with a little more movement - thanks to the effects leaning toward a groovier sound. Opening the evening will be The Ghost In You, a.k.a. Billy Polard, providing serene vocals full of reminiscence and a wistful optimism towards the past. Queens outfit, Pearl and the Beard, brings a powerhouse trio of vocal artists who sing over beautiful orchestrations of various strings and percussions, alongside the traditional guitar, drum, and bass. Ok, maybe you may want to say a bit of grace for this plentiful bill. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ - Shaylin O’Connell
