Now in its 6th year, Out In the Streets Festival is back in action to bring your favorite indie bands to Queens for a weekend of art, food, fun, and music. Hosted at the historic Onderdonk House in Ridgewood, the outdoor fest is the smaller, DIY version of all the big summer music festivals that have competed for your attention and presence in the past few months. Since it began on a street corner in Bushwick in 2009, Out In the Streets has kept itself homegrown and independent but continues to grow every year, celebrating local artists and eateries in this two-day multimedia festival. The lineup includes bands like Mr Twin Sister, Total Slacker, The Love Supreme, Wild Yaks, Salt Cathedral and many more. The bands performing this weekend are all mostly NYC-based, and the lineup on Sunday is featuring local bands from Bushwick and Ridgewood. Full weekend passes are still available for only $35, with one day tickets going for $20, on sale here. Frankly, it was hard not to fall for the bar-fly folk-punk frenzies of Wild Yaks' last full-length '10 Ships (Don't Die Yet)'; all were far too generous & genuine to be overlooked. Yet for any left on the fence after the first effort, the Brooklyn four-piece is back hitting harder, with a new album, the first single off which they debuted yesterday via Brooklyn Vegan. Title track 'A Million Years' (follow the link), coming at you invasively passionate, pushes hazardous harmonies overflowing with soul through crunching waves of dissonances and ever-changing rhythms, channeling the spirit of their debut in thrice as impactive an output that offers a most inviting glimpse into upcoming album 'Million Years' (to be released November 20th via Ernest Jennings Rec. Company). Booked for a couple of CMJ shows next week, the band will be setting off on a series of dates with O'Death and The World Inferno Friendship Society right after the album release, starting on November 23rd in Amityville. - Tracy Mamoun 

I can't even imagine the Lower East Side without The Cake Shop, which has been going through some financial hardships as of late. The loss of this venue would mean that the more noisy, experimental, and DIY side of the NYC scene would have abandoned Manhattan once and for all. And noisy, experimental and DIY music is a huge and seminal component of what this scene has expressed since the 60s. Ya man, it all happened in Manhattan - nobody gave a crap about the Brooklyn scene until the aughts! This is why we should all make an effort to visit The Cake Shop more often, in particular this Saturday July 14th, when 4 great local bands and legendary DJ Dan Selzer (of NY Happenings Yahoo Group fame) will entertain hopefully a packed house in support of the Ludlow Street rowdiest venue. Hilarious drunk punks Wild Yaks willheadline, bringing the usual dose of unruly fun on stage, preceded by Shilpa Ray's charismatic and imaginative freak folk (one of her songs streaming below). The opening bands will be soul-rock quartet The Immaculates and ungooglable garage-blues band DON'T. There will be also a photo exhibit by local photographer Ebru Yildiz.

Brooklyn's Cameo Gallery is hosting a garage-rock lover's wet dream on Saturday, May 5th. Headliners, Wild Yaks bring their cheerfully haphazard, loud rock and unified choruses to the stage. Once already lovingly referred to as "Brooklyn's drunk folk-punk icons" by The Deli, their live performances are a guaranteed good time regardless of whether or not you're familiar with their tunes - check out a recent video here.
Raccoon Fighter pave the way for the Yaks, with their rockin', seductive garage jams. their big, raw sound and powerful guitars are soulful and even bluesy when combined with their emotive vocals - here's a video from last year.
Self-proclaimed "American dance-punk band", The Toothaches will open the night with a lively set including multi-part harmonies and undeniably fun, catchy pop songs. Members often perform in costume and/or without face paint. Also on the bill Boston's Girlfriends.
