Stream Astro Tan's 'Canary,' Out Today

Dual guitars, primo percussion and an interesting blend of jazz, psych, r&b and indie rock have propelled local trio Astro Tan into the hearts of music lovers around town for the last couple years now. A few EPs here, a couple free released singles there, Astro Tan haven't given us a full length's worth of the trippy soul we've all been waiting for, until now.

Canary, out today, pulls a few previously released tracks and throws them in with some newer ones like "The Jetsons," a wispily melodic tune relating modern life and love to the animated quips of the old school futuristic cartoon of the same name. It shows Astro Tan taking what they do best to the next level.

The Quick & Easy Boys Release Fourth Album "Follow Us Overboard"

The fourth album has cometh. This was the name of The Quick & Easy Boys Kickstarter campaign that began early last spring, and after a long wait, the CD release show at the Wonder Ballroom is only a few days away.

The band raised a good amount of money to put out an album with the help of the finest talent this city has to offer. They recorded with producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) at the private studio of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. And once again, Portland’s finest party makers have delivered a fine-tuned album with their signature funky blues style and progressive rock rhythms.

This album is quite a bit different than the first three, clearly because of the work and influence Steve Berlin put into it. I wouldn’t call it a new direction, rather an expansion on something they’ve been doing for many years. It’s not the raw DIY project they’ve been accustomed to. Follow Us Overboard contains more instruments and a lot more layers, which is appropriate because their live show sounds as if there are more than three people on stage.

The Quick & Easy Boys are known for hard hitting blues based rock and this album does just that – even though it starts off slow with “Breath.” Guitarist Jimmy Russell takes a slower approach to his blues twang on this song, but by the time the album reaches the third song “Die” you can hear his telecaster damn near blowing his amplifier to pieces with the opening riff. One thing that stands out is the voice of lead vocalist (and bassist) Sean Badders. He has one of the most dynamic rock voices in Portland and is given justice by the clarity of the production work on this album.

Towards the end of the album, we are blessed with the song “Rave Bird” which is the perfect mix of their elements and new found production. It’s a funky beat with bold echoes and phasing effects behind a piercing guitar solo that ends up sounding like something off of Led Zeppelin’s BBC tapes.

The Boys have been touring relentlessly for the past five years. Now with new drummer, Casey Anderson, they plan on continuing that trend and reaching new heights. After all they’ve always had the excellent musicianship and an ability to put on a breathtaking live show, and now they have the album to back that up.

The Quick and Easy Boys will release Follow Us Overboard this Saturday October 4th at The Wonder Ballroom with the accompaniment of blues rock extraordinaire, Tango Alpha Tango, and the folk harmonies of The Hill Dogs. Tickets are $12 and the doors open at 8. Get there early because beer lines will be long. Stream three tracks from Follow Us Overboard below.

KZME Presents: Tango Alpha Tango 3.13.2014

Tango Alpha Tango headline the Doug Fir this Thursday with their high-energy, bluesy classic rock sounds--watch frontman Nathan Trueb for shredding guitar solos. Main support Fox and the Law have long been infiltrating the Portland scene with their hard-hitting rock n roll, including a recent live performance recorded at Banana Stand Media to be released in the near future. The Lower 48 open the night, trading guitar solos for harmonies and rad Beatles esque pop tunes.

The Lower 48, Minden and Tango Alpha Tango at Mississippi Studios

Tango Alpha Tango opened the festivities in funky fashion with high energy and crunchy bass lines that thrive on bluesy guitar riffs to get the energy going and the crowd moving.

Minden then took the stage to present their world of soul music to an audience eager to hear about it. This six piece mixes indie rock with soul so well it's like the 80s never happened.

Closing out the show was the fabulous threesome, the Lower 48. They wore suits, stood on bass drums, and cranked out their vintage folk-pop with punk edges.

This show had enough quality to put any scrooge in the mood for Christmas joy.

The Lower 48, Minden and Tango Alpha Tango at Mississippi Studios 12.20

Christmas will be arriving five days early in North Portland this Friday. Three of Portland’s biggest acts of 2013 will be hosting a yuletide celebration that will make your office Christmas party look like… well, an office Christmas party. Sorry, no time for fancy rhetoric, here’s the skinny: Tango Alpha Tango will go on first. Their guitar-driven rock makes them one of the bluesiest bands this city has in its books and they play in such a raw way that you can’t help but move to the fine-tone rhythms and fuzzy keyboard that gives them a funky edge. And not slacking in the funk category is the soulful six-piece, Minden. Whether you like their melodic keyboards, smooth bass, or harmonizing vocals, you will surely get your fix when Minden takes the stage. Finally, the hosts, The Lower 48 will headline the bill. The vintage-pop sounds laden with folk songwriting has built quite the name for this band in the local scene. The past six months touring all over the west coast, east coast, and the Midwest and finally make it back to Portland just in time for a holiday extravaganza. This Friday, the triumphant bells will ring sounds of joy for one more concert 2013 won’t forget. - Colin Hudson
