The popular San Francisco based indie rock band, Social Studies is returning with a new full length album entitled, Wake. Releasing their first EP in 2007, San Francisco’s own indie pop/rock outfit, Social Studies, have undergone multiple reincarnations before finding their current line-up and signature sound.

San Francisco based garage pop musician, Luke Sweeney has released a brand new music video for his single, Miss Me? The video is a very funny tongue and cheek, vignette style short film featuring some of the Bay Area’s best and brightest bands in the local music scene.

Appearances from Social Studies, Warm Soda, Vandella, The Aerosols, Midtown Social, and members of Two Gallants and Trainwreck Riders shows that Sweeney is not only a talented musician in his own right, but has a great connection with music community that surrounds him.

Miss Me?’s satirical look at the challenges of auditioning for rock bands will surely make you break out into laughter. Sweeney’s fictitious accounts of rejection and social turmoil are almost as accurate as they are hilarious. He also did a great job in adopting the talent of videographer, Emily Sevin and editor Neal Jonas as his vision (Sweeney wrote and directed the video) is brought to life, while exhibiting seamless transitions and high definition quality.

Stop in and celebrate the release of Upstairs Downstairs' new self-titled LP, as well as the start of Social Studies’ November residency at Brick & Mortar Music Hall, TONIGHT!

Upstairs Downstairs creates dreamy and dark sounds that leaves listeners and spectators trapped and entranced within their deep shoegaze compositional style. Social Studies, who will be taking over the venue for the next few Mondays to promote the recording of their new album, play some indie dance tunes to get you on the floor and moving. Tartufi brings a whole new meaning to the noise rock genre, and rely heavily on eloquent and carefully crafted use of instruments and enthralling vocals.

Even with huge festivals like Outside Lands, there’s still a large amount of local acts that get lost in the shuffle of this fest's rock star studded line-up’s and the immense number of bands in general. While great underground local bands may be hard to pick out, it isn’t impossible. That’s why we here at The Deli Magazine San Francisco have put together a list of the 12 bands that are currently representing and residing in the Bay Area, and are making amazing music.

Social Studies | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Twin Peaks Stage – 12:45 to 1:25 - Social Studies is a band with a blend of 60s flower pop type sound with strong vocals. Their most recent Daytrotter session of their song “Live For Today” features a catchy sound with enough vocal power from Natalia Rogovin to mesmerize you throughout their performance.

The Mother Hips | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Panhandle Stage – 6:05 to 6:50 - The Mother Hips have a psychedelic garage type sound (although a little more rock n’ roll than anything) with just enough melody to differentiate from the large amounts of lo-fi acts that have been showing up within the last couple of years. They just released their album, “Behind Beyond”, which features the track “Jefferson Army”, which has a slow beginning with a perfectly executed build into their signature psychedelic rock n’ roll sound. Electric guitar riffs and all.

Dub Gabriel | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ The Dome by Heineken Stage – 12 to 1:30 - Dub Gabriel creates a balanced ground between reggae vocals and sounds with heavy dubstep beats and rhythm. His most recent release titled “Raggabass Resistance” blends heavy reggae vocals with a large amount of synth, drums, and bass.

The Soft White Sixties | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Land’s End Stage – 1:00 to 1:50 - The Soft White Sixties have a rock n’ roll feel that features distorted bass, heavy guitar licks, and even vocals with heavy effects. Their song, “Queen of the Press Club”, has a classic rock feel - with shredding guitars and heavy distortion everywhere. And I mean everywhere.

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down | SAN FRANCISCO | Day 2 @ Sutro Stage – 4:40 to 5:30 - Thao and the Get Down Stay Down has a familiar indie rock sound with distinct vocals provided by lead singer Thao Nguyen. Their song, “We The Common (For Valerie Bolden)” features a banjo riff, a bumping rhythm section, and even refined back-up vocals. - Victor Casillas Valle

On May 1st the Alhambra Theater (formerly Mt. Tabor Theater) will be celebrating their hundredth year as a Portland venue. To commemorate the occasion they are throwing a five day music festival featuring the talent of Red Fang, Y La Bamba, Black Prairie and over a dozen more. For the second day of the festival The Deli Portland and Eleven Magazine worked together to put together a special showcase featuring 8 of the best bands our city has to offer. Social Studies, Hustle and Drone, Glassbones and Pheasant will be sharing the stage in the concert hall while Catherine Feeny, Sama Dams, Summer Cannibals and Jolliff will be gracing the lounge with their phenomenal range of sounds. Get to the Alhambra on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:30pm to take part in the best birthday party of the year for the reasonable price of completely free (seriously). I’ll see you there.
