Negative Gemini

Negative Gemini brings brooding electronica to Mercury Lounge 04.06

The music of Negative Gemini (real name Lindsey French) feels spring-loaded - full of tension and liable to blow at any moment. At a cursory listen, the instrumentation on Negative Gemini's most recent EP, Bad Baby, is smooth, and almost mellow. However, factor in her velvety-yet-seething vocals, and the color of her music takes on a whole different shade. It's dark, it's staticky, it's at times dissonant and it's always urgent. Dread seems to hover over many of French's songs - a vague sense of impending doom - or it may just be the spectre of depression lurking in the corner. Ultimately, it's up to the listener to interpret the feelings encapsulated in French's music, and they're plenty. Negative Gemini is playing at Mercury Lounge on April 6th, with CIFKA, Ani Klang, FEE LION and Wild Kid. Listen to "My Innocence" below! - Ethan Ames

UMFANG and Negative Gemini co-headline Brooklyn avant-electro night at Palisades on 01.30

If danceable but clever electronica is your kind of thing, on the night of January 30th you should go to Palisades. The night will see four Brooklyn electronic producers perform on stage, with an added visual component courtesy of Frottage Industry. The most buzzworthy names on the bill are UMFANG (pictured) and Negative Gemini. The former is the project of Bronx born producer Emma Olson, whose output ranges from underground techno to less beat-driven, experimental tracks like the latest single "Pills" (streaming). Olson also founded Discwoman, an organization focused on promoting female-identified talent in electronic music.

Negative Gemini, the brainchild of Lindsey French, is also a one woman project - we covered her in this blog this past October. Lindsey's debut EP "Real Virtual Unison" unveils more structured and song oriented material, featuring dream pop and droney new wave elements. Check out her recent single "You Never Knew," streaming below.

On the bill also Physical Therapy and Doss.

NYC Negative Gemini plays three CMJ shows this week - Bowery Electric Tomorrow (10.14)

Queens-based Negative Gemini - a project started by composer/programmer Lindsey French after her hip hop group dismantled - has been getting some attention this year after the release of debut EP "Real Virtual Unison." Her electronic sound escapes the synth-pop cathegorization, borrowing insatead from the dark, tense, and drony aesthetics of the early new wave (as in the more electronic, less extreme cousin of post punk). Our favorite track "Forget Your Future" (streaming below), never lets the tension fade, flirting with dissonance, while extremely filtered vocals harmonize in a crescendo of desperation. Negative Gemini has three shows scheduled this week within the CMJ Music Marathon, the first one at Bowery Electric on Wednesday 10.14. - Photo by Julia Nichols.
