We were curious to see Brooklyn garage rockers Heeney in action again, after they placed 8th in our Best of NYC Poll for emerging artists, and we caught in them in Austin at Lambert's BBQ during the SESAC SXSW last Wednesday. They produced an impressively tight, powerful and fun show. Mark Fletcher, Max Kagan and Scott Andrews alternated at the lead vocals and backing vocals, but this didn't affect the uniformity of their grunge influenced punk rock. The band recently unveiled this one-shot video for single "In the Mind," and will be back in NYC with two upcoming shows at Aviv on March 27 and at The Studio on April 11.

From their early work, which we'd described as influenced by pre-mainstream-grunge, Brooklyn quartet Heeney has rapidly evolved into an exciting and powerful blend of grunge, post punk and power pop. The band, named after Brooklyn DIY venue Shea Stadium co-founder Sean Heaney, just released this new single, revealingly titled "Brooklyn Pop," from their upcoming debut full length, scheduled for the summer. You can see them live at Pianos on February 26, and the day after at new Greenpoint venue Aviv.

As you may have noticed, our blogger Jake tends to favor bands with a DIY punk philosophy and an unpredictable, often uncompromisingly noisy sound. And that's what you are going to get at the show he organized - under the moniker "The Colonel Presents..." - at Palisades on October 2nd.  The show is headlined by noise rockers Honduras and The Gradients (check out album opener 'Growing Pile,' streaming), who are actually not that noisy, but play a brand of poppy post punk that's as good as (and in part reminiscent of) that mind blowind phenomenon that was early XTC. On the bill also macabre Brooklynites Show Me The Body (pictured, check out their bizarre but engrossing track 'One Train' below) and fast paced fuzz pop quartet Heeney. 

The third day of the 2014 CMJ marathon reserves a rather unusual double Deli bill at Spike Hill in Williamsburg. We'll start with 90 minutes of semi-unadulterated wall of fuzz with 3 noisy but melodious Brooklyn bands, and progress to a late night of afrobeat and funk!
