Last month, West Chester-based quartet Father Figure released their debut record Weird Love. The collection is littered with an exuberant, emotive blend of melodic power pop that will aid in shedding those rainy day blues away. "Bailey" glides in a gentle roll while discussing the desire to alter the dynamics of a relationship or abandon it all together. What starts as an inviting inside take quickly shifts toward an agitated ultimatum.

The Deli Portland will be back at the Mt. Tabor Theater this Friday to host a night of outstanding local music. This month the kinetic haze of The Hugs will be rocking the concert hall with A Happy Death’s riotous garage rock and Father Figure’s anthemic indie rock ballads. In the lounge, Mars Water will be delivering an otherworldy performance alongside Mufassa’s psychedelic tones and Bath Party’s dynamic spin on the surf rock genre. The show starts at 9pm sharp, be there to experience some of the most delectable music Portland has to offer for the low price of five dollars.  

The second annual Big Ass Boombox Festival is this weekend, and you should probably go. You really have no reason not to. There are over 40 bands at 4 different venues in 2 days and it costs nothing, except maybe max rides and PBR. Shows are going to be downtown at Someday Lounge, Backspace, Kelly's Olympian, and Floating World Comics (awesome!). There are going to be so many rad bands, like Wooden Indian Burial Ground (Friday, Someday), Father Figure (Saturday, Kelly's) and Tiananmen Bear (Saturday, Someday). Check out the lineup and set times at www.bigassboombox.com. It is going to be great and you don't even have to walk far. - Annie Wheeler

It’s taken about a year, but Portland is finally giving Father Figure the respect their melodic brand of indie rock deserves. They’ve gone from sharing their catchy, at times anthemic songs with crowded houses and dive bars to some of the town's more established venues, such as Ron Toms and Mississippi Studios. Since the release of their debut EP, “Tremmels”, they’ve been gaining momentum; the EP is an impressive debut, with enough reverb drenched lead lines and swooning vocal hooks you’ll catch yourself trying to sing along on the first listen.
